About Ocean Knowledge

VOTO Ocean Knowledge wants to help scientists understand the sea as a system. This is done through the collection of data useful for research. Ocean Knowledge works along two different timelines: 1) collection of data for current scientific research, 2) collection of data to make up for the lack of long-term data series, with the aim of helping science in the future (10 years and beyond) to answer questions that may occur over time. Ocean Knowledge creates a baseline of data about the sea for future generations.

VOTO Ocean Knowledge works with two key concepts: sustainability and precision (a high level of reliability and exactitude). Continuous collection of data offers a new level of resolution regarding factual information about the sea – for science to work with. Ocean Knowledge has the equipment, the experience and the knowledge to create these baselines for both simple and complex tasks.

One of the aims for the foundation is to highlight a number of questions crucial to a sound management of the Baltic Sea and to collect data and knowledge to help answer these questions. The system used for this collection of data is proven and trustworthy. Without these data baselines there can be no reliable testimonies about the status of the sea, no understanding of cause and effect and small chances to make predictions about the future. For this purpose, Ocean Knowledge fulfills an important function to increase credibility and widen the basic knowledge so that decision-making can be based on facts rather than guesswork.

Ocean Knowledge has the equipment to generate data and in the long run to create a plan for sensible management of the Baltic Sea. This is done by offering this collection of data to science. The end users are the people who live around the Baltic Sea. It is for them to vote in democratic order for a policy of sustainability for the sea.

Ocean Knowledge works along the following lines: engaging young researchers to use our data and publish our results; creating a scientific board with international standing; encouraging applications to use our fleet of autonomous vehicles in scientific projects; building experience of autonomous measuring systems in complex environments; supporting the development of true autonomy for data collection at sea; supporting the development of robust autonomous systems for collection of data over time; inviting scientists from different fields for cross-disciplinary work to understand the Baltic Sea and its status.

Ocean Knowledge works to present a relevant model for the balance of oxygen and nutrients in the Baltic Sea within a five-year period. We support intellectual freedom. We are open to all questions. By delivering data for free, we want to reduce the pressure to find financing and equipment so that scientists can concentrate on research. We want to enable a correct diagnosis on the patient, the Baltic Sea.
