Metylkvicksilverproduktionen har fr\u00e4mst tillskrivits olika typer av bakterier som inte beh\u00f6ver syre. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kvicksilverf\u00f6roreningar \u00e4r en viktig milj\u00f6fr\u00e5ga och kvicksilver anses av WHO vara en av de tio farligaste kemikalierna f\u00f6r folkh\u00e4lsan. De problem som orsakas av kvicksilver \u00e4r fr\u00e4mst en f\u00f6ljd av bildandet och spridningen av metylkvicksilver i akvatiska ekosystem. Efter f\u00f6rsta lektionen sa l\u00e4raren: \u201dTa med era gummist\u00f6vlar n\u00e4sta vecka, vi ska g\u00e5 ut och ta prover p\u00e5 sj\u00f6n!\u201d. Klassen tog med sig sina st\u00f6vlar och samlade in prover och utf\u00f6rde olika kemiska m\u00e4tningar. Utan att veta exakt vad de skulle f\u00f6rv\u00e4nta sig. I slutet av lektionen sa l\u00e4raren, \u201dG\u00e5 nu hem, t\u00e4nk efter och f\u00f6rs\u00f6k att f\u00f6rklara era resultat. Den som kommer p\u00e5 det r\u00e4tta svaret f\u00e5r glass n\u00e4sta vecka!\u201d. Ingen elev lyckades f\u00e5 glass under de f\u00f6rsta veckorna.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men f\u00f6r Erik visade sig l\u00e4rarens tillv\u00e4gag\u00e5ngss\u00e4tt vara ett startskott som v\u00e4ckte nyfikenhet och en \u00f6nskan om att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 hur milj\u00f6n fungerar. Denna process sker inuti cellen hos vissa typer av bakterier som trivs i syrefria f\u00f6rh\u00e5llanden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Naturliga och m\u00e4nskligt p\u00e5verkade, syrefria milj\u00f6er<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Runt om p\u00e5 jorden finns det naturligt syrefria milj\u00f6er. Dessa platser brukar kallas \u201dd\u00f6da zoner\u201d, men de inhyser organismer som kan leva utan n\u00e4rvaro av syre. Ett bra exempel p\u00e5 detta \u00e4r D\u00f6da havet. \u00c4ven om vissa delar av \u00d6stersj\u00f6n \u00e4r naturligt syrefria, f\u00f6r\u00e4ndras dessa omr\u00e5den p\u00e5 grund av vissa m\u00e4nskliga aktiviteter. Denna omvandling resulterar i optimala f\u00f6rh\u00e5llanden f\u00f6r de bakterier som orsakar bildandet av metylkvicksilver, eftersom de kan leva i syrefattiga vatten.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Med andra ord skulle f\u00f6rekomsten av syre i vattnet hindra kvicksilver fr\u00e5n att bli metylkvicksilver, som \u00e4r giftigare och l\u00e4ttare kan absorberas av djur.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">K\u00e4llor till kvicksilver, naturliga och m\u00e4nskliga<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kvicksilver sprids globalt till milj\u00f6n via naturliga k\u00e4llor, s\u00e5 som vittring och vulkanutbrott. Det sprids \u00e4ven via m\u00e4nskliga aktiviteter, fr\u00e4mst kolf\u00f6rbr\u00e4nning och sm\u00e5skalig guldutvinning. Sedan den industriella revolutionen har den st\u00f6rsta delen av spridningen av kvicksilver varit relaterad till m\u00e4nniskan. Ett viktigt exempel p\u00e5 lokala kvicksilverk\u00e4llor \u00e4r sediment som f\u00f6rorenats av tidigare industriell verksamhet. Att \u00e5terst\u00e4lla s\u00e5dana f\u00f6rorenade omr\u00e5den till en f\u00f6rindustriell niv\u00e5 \u00e4r avg\u00f6rande f\u00f6r att uppfylla flera av Sveriges nationella milj\u00f6kvalitetsm\u00e5l och generationsm\u00e5l.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eriks engagemang inom omr\u00e5det<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Det finns tv\u00e5 huvudsakliga anledningar till att Erik \u00e4r engagerad inom detta omr\u00e5de. En nyfikenhet och vilja att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 processer i milj\u00f6n som b\u00f6rjade redan under gymnasietiden, finns fortfarande kvar. Han drivs ocks\u00e5 av viljan att bidra med n\u00e5got som \u00e4r viktigt. Att arbeta f\u00f6r minska kvicksilverf\u00f6roreningarna \u00e4r ett tydligt exempel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hur p\u00e5verkar metylkvicksilver m\u00e4nniskan <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Metylkvicksilver \u00e4r mycket neurotoxiskt och h\u00f6g exponering kan orsaka intellektuell funktionsneds\u00e4ttning hos foster som \u00e4r s\u00e4rskilt k\u00e4nsliga f\u00f6r kvicksilverexponering. Livsmedelsverket har d\u00e4rf\u00f6r utf\u00e4rdat kostr\u00e5d f\u00f6r viss fisk till gravid kvinnor, de som ammar eller planerar att skaffa barn.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6rutom effekter p\u00e5 m\u00e4nniskors h\u00e4lsa p\u00e5verkar kvicksilverf\u00f6roreningar \u00e4ven ekosystemet. I \u00d6stersj\u00f6n rankas kvicksilver som en av de allvarligaste biota-f\u00f6roreningarna av HELCOM.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kvicksilverkoncentrationerna \u00f6verskrider m\u00e5lv\u00e4rdet f\u00f6r en h\u00e5llbar milj\u00f6 i 95% av fiskproverna och i praktiskt taget alla musselprover.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/06-Methylmercury-effects.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2961\" style=\"width:1080px;height:1080px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/06-Methylmercury-effects.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/06-Methylmercury-effects-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/06-Methylmercury-effects-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/06-Methylmercury-effects-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Projektet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Det totala antalet f\u00f6rorenade omr\u00e5den \u00e4r m\u00e5nga i Sverige, s\u00e4rskilt l\u00e4ngst \u00d6stersj\u00f6kusten. Det finns ett behov av f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttrade riskbed\u00f6mningar av f\u00f6rorenade sediment, inklusive f\u00f6rst\u00e5else f\u00f6r vilka faktorer som styr bildandet av det mycket giftiga metylkvicksilvret. \u00c5tg\u00e4rder f\u00f6r att minska riskerna m\u00e5ste prioriteras f\u00f6r de platser som utg\u00f6r den st\u00f6rsta risken.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erik och hans team kommer att f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra riskbed\u00f6mningen av f\u00f6rorenade sediment l\u00e4ngs den svenska \u00d6stersj\u00f6kusten genom att identifiera de kritiska faktorer som styr bildandet av metylkvicksilver i s\u00e5dana milj\u00f6er.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Till att b\u00f6rja med kommer Erik och hans team att identifiera de processer som avg\u00f6r om kvicksilvret \u00e4r av den typ som kan omvandlas till metylkvicksilver i varje sorts sediment. Det andra steget \u00e4r att isolera de processer som styr aktiviteten, eller produktiviteten hos de bakterier som ansvarar f\u00f6r metylkivcksilverbildningen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voice of the Ocean (VOTO) bidrar till detta projekt genom att tillhandah\u00e5lla st\u00f6d f\u00f6r f\u00e4ltarbete och infrastruktur. VOTO kommer att bist\u00e5 med fartyg och personal, vilket kommer utvidga det ursprungliga f\u00e4ltarbetsomr\u00e5det till ett betydande geografiskt omr\u00e5de som omfattar ett bredare spektrum av milj\u00f6f\u00f6rh\u00e5llanden.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/07-Focus-area.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/07-Focus-area.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/07-Focus-area-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/07-Focus-area-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/voiceoftheocean.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/07-Focus-area-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Baserat p\u00e5 denna kunskap kommer Erik och hans team att fastst\u00e4lla vilken av de tv\u00e5 processerna som avg\u00f6r hur mycket metylkvicksilver som bildas i sedimentet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dessa resultat kommer att vara n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndiga f\u00f6r att f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra kvicksilverf\u00f6rorenade sediment, inklusive att f\u00f6ruts\u00e4ga effekterna av f\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar i milj\u00f6n (t.ex p\u00e5 grund av \u00f6verg\u00f6dning eller klimatf\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar) och anpassa markanv\u00e4ndning och f\u00f6rvaltning av vattenresurser i n\u00e4rheten av f\u00f6rorenade omr\u00e5den.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resultaten kommer ocks\u00e5 att vara viktiga f\u00f6r att optimera \u00e5tg\u00e4rder f\u00f6r f\u00f6rorenade sediment. Ur ett bredare perspektiv kommer resultaten att hj\u00e4lpa ekosystemen att \u00e5terh\u00e4mta sig snabbare fr\u00e5n kvicksilverf\u00f6roreningar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Varf\u00f6r \u00e4r det h\u00e4r intressant f\u00f6r VOTO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intag av kvicksilver har tydliga, l\u00e5ngsiktiga effekter p\u00e5 v\u00e5r h\u00e4lsa och \u00d6stersj\u00f6n \u00e4r k\u00e4nd f\u00f6r sina h\u00f6ga kvicksilverhalter. Genom en b\u00e4ttre f\u00f6rst\u00e5else f\u00f6r vad som styr den rumsliga och tidsm\u00e4ssiga f\u00f6rdelningen av dessa giftiga avlagringar och omvandlingen till metylkvicksilver kommer bidra till att v\u00e4gleda framtida politiska \u00e5tg\u00e4rder f\u00f6r att b\u00e5de st\u00e4da upp och minska \u00e4mnet i v\u00e5ra hav. Eriks forskning \u00e4r tydligt motiverad och hans team \u00e4r v\u00e4l inr\u00e4ttat f\u00f6r att producera resultat med stor inverkan p\u00e5 samh\u00e4llet. Det bidrag som VOTO kan ge, kan \u00f6ka den geografiska effekten av studien avsev\u00e4rt och ger en mer robust databas f\u00f6r teamet att analysera.
